Our Story
Shore Consulting, Training and Equipment was born from a passion for accessibility and inclusivity, founded by Michael Welter and Kristen Lang.
A dedicated educator, Michael began his journey at Western Maryland College in 1997, earning his degree and starting his career as a special education teacher and teacher of the Deaf. His commitment to breaking barriers led him to UMass Boston, where he pursued Orientation and Mobility training. In August 2016, he earned his COMS certification, solidifying his expertise in guiding individuals with vision impairments toward greater independence.

Kristen Lang joined Michael in his business, Shore O&M, in 2020, bringing over a decade of experience with the DeafBlind communities of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. A graduate of Bloomsburg University (2012) with a Bachelor's in American Sign Language/English Interpreting, Kristen expanded her skillset by earning a Master’s in Vision Rehabilitation Therapy/Orientation and Mobility from UMass Boston. In 2020, she achieved dual certifications as a CVRT and COMS, further enhancing the team’s capabilities.

Together, Michael and Kristen began building Shore O&M’s clientele in New Jersey, realizing an urgent need for tailored services for the state’s DeafBlind community. Their breakthrough came with a training contract from NJ Access Link, where they provided drivers with essential tools for interacting and communicating with DeafBlind riders. The overwhelmingly positive feedback encouraged them to expand their offerings, and Shore Consulting, Training and Equipment (Shore CTE) was born.

The team soon collaborated with the New Jersey Commission for the Blind, addressing concerns about home safety alerting devices. Shore CTE stepped up as a vendor, providing not just training but also essential equipment, brailled documents, and communication cards.

What began as a small endeavor to meet a local need has since blossomed into a thriving business. Today, Shore O&M is a vital resource, empowering individuals, businesses, and organizations to create a more inclusive and accessible world for the DeafBlind community.
